Fatty Acid Composition and Plant-Based Omega-3 in Sacha Inchi Oil
Sacha inchi oil is obtained from Plukenetia volubilis L. seeds and is valued for its fatty-acid profile. Studies commonly report polyunsaturated fatty acids—particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA; omega-3) and linoleic acid (LA; omega-6)—as major fractions, together with oleic acid and smaller amounts of saturated fatty acids.
UNDERSTANDING PLANT-BASED OMEGA-3
ALA is an essential fatty acid obtained through diet. It can serve as a precursor to EPA and DHA, but conversion is limited and influenced by multiple factors. Sacha inchi oil should therefore be described as a source of ALA or plant-based omega-3; it is not compositionally identical to fish oil, which directly supplies EPA and DHA.
COMPOSITION IS NOT A SINGLE FIXED NUMBER
Reported percentages vary among samples. Genotype, soil, climate, harvest maturity, drying, seed storage, extraction, and refining may influence composition. Commercial claims should be supported by GC-FID or GC-MS analysis of the relevant batch rather than literature values alone.
MINOR COMPONENTS
The oil may also contain tocopherols and phytosterols. Their concentrations depend on origin and processing. Content statements should specify the analytical method, unit, batch identity, and—where relevant—the limit of quantification.
OXIDATION: THE CENTRAL QUALITY CHALLENGE
A high polyunsaturated-fatty-acid content increases susceptibility to heat, oxygen, light, and pro-oxidant metals. Quality assessment should extend beyond the omega profile to acid value or FFA, peroxide value, p-anisidine value, TOTOX, moisture, fatty-acid profile, oxidative stability, and storage conditions.
Protection may involve controlled low-temperature processing, minimal air contact, inert gas where feasible, suitable antioxidants, high-barrier light-protective packaging, low headspace, and cool storage. Effectiveness must be confirmed through stability studies.
INTERPRETING CLAIMS
“Contains omega-3” is a compositional statement requiring analytical support and compliance with product-category regulations. Disease-risk or therapeutic claims require much stronger evidence and regulatory authorization. Early clinical studies suggest potential effects on selected lipid parameters, but findings cannot be generalized to every product, dose, or population.
CONCLUSION
Sacha inchi oil combines an attractive ALA profile with opportunities for local ingredient development. Its credibility depends on standardization, traceability, oxidation control, batch-specific data, and responsible claims.
