Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.) is a climbing plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, recognized by its star-shaped fruit. Its seeds can be processed into oil, food products, flour, or protein-rich ingredients, while leaves and processing by-products remain subjects of continuing research.
WHY INDONESIA?
Indonesia combines diverse agroecological conditions, agricultural experience, research capacity, and expanding markets for healthy foods, supplements, cosmetics, and natural ingredients. The opportunity is therefore not limited to a single product. It extends across an integrated value chain—from seed and cultivation to post-harvest handling, processing, standardization, formulation, and higher-value products.
FROM CROP TO INNOVATION PLATFORM
Sacha inchi seeds contain oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids, while press cake retains a substantial protein fraction. Actual composition varies with genotype, location, harvest maturity, storage, and processing. Published composition figures should not be assumed to represent every commercial material; product- and batch-specific testing remains essential.
Potential applications include native and refined oils, processed nuts, flour and protein ingredients, functional foods, cosmetic ingredients, lipid-based delivery systems, supplements, feed, and by-product valorization. Each application requires its own specifications, safety evidence, efficacy evidence, and regulatory pathway.
RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT
Safety begins with raw-material control. Raw seeds contain antinutritional components and should not be consumed without validated processing. Oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids is oxidation-sensitive; processing, antioxidant strategy, air and light exposure, packaging, and storage must therefore be controlled. Health claims must reflect the level of evidence: compositional data are not clinical proof, and laboratory findings cannot automatically be translated into therapeutic benefits in humans.
