The terms native and refined describe processing routes rather than an automatic quality ranking. Selection should reflect intended use, sensory profile, stability, specification, formulation process, and regulatory requirements.

Native oil
Native oil is generally obtained by pressing prepared seeds, followed by settling or filtration with minimal processing. This approach aims to retain the oil's natural character. Colour and aroma may be more noticeable, while raw-material and post-harvest variation can have a greater influence.

Refined oil
Refined oil undergoes controlled purification to reduce unwanted constituents, improve colour or odour, and deliver a more consistent profile. Depending on process design, stages may include clarification, adsorption, decolourisation, deodorisation, and filtration. Each step should be validated to achieve its objective without uncontrolled oxidation or quality loss.

1. Sensory profile: native oil is often more characteristic; refined oil is generally more neutral.
2. Consistency: refining may reduce batch-to-batch colour and odour variation.
3. Stability: category alone does not determine stability. Seed quality, oxygen, light, heat, pro-oxidant metals, antioxidants, packaging, and storage all matter.
4. Composition: the fatty-acid profile should be tested in the actual material. Composition claims should not rely on literature values alone.
5. Application: native oil may suit products where natural character is desired; refined oil may suit formulations requiring a more neutral colour and odour.
6. Documentation: both require specifications, batch COAs, traceability, defined storage conditions, and data-supported shelf life.

Relevant quality assessment
Evaluation may include appearance, odour, moisture, acid value or free fatty acids, peroxide value, secondary oxidation indicators when appropriate, fatty-acid profile, contaminants, stability, and formulation compatibility.

Product-development selection
For food, supplements, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, or veterinary products, decisions must reflect intended use and category-specific regulation. Raw-material testing does not replace finished-product assessment. Formulators should evaluate stability, safety, use level, ingredient interactions, packaging, and permitted claims.

- which process and critical parameters are used;
- whether specifications and batch COAs are available;
- how oxygen, light, and heat exposure are controlled;

Both native and refined oils can meet high quality standards when properly produced, tested, packaged, and stored. The best choice is the oil whose specification fits the intended application and is supported by actual batch data.
